Tropical Storm Henri weakens after it makes landfall in western Rhode Island
Tropical Storm Henri, which became a minimal hurricane on Saturday, made landfall near Westerly, Rhode Island around 12:15 p.m. EDT Sunday. Maximum sustained winds at landfall were estimated to be 50 knots (60 mph), with an estimated minimum pressure of 989 mb. Since that time, Henri has weakened quickly as it has moved inland.
As of 5:00 p.m. EDT Sunday, Tropical Storm Henri was centered near 41.6°N 72.4°W, and was moving west-northwestward at about 7 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 35 knots (40 mph), with an estimated minimum pressure of 997 mb. All watches and warnings have been discontinued, but the rainfall threat will continue over New England, as well as eastern New York, northern New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania into early Monday. Henri’s center should take a sharp U-turn as it moves into southeastern New York while weakening, with Henri or its remnants taking a sharp turn eastward tomorrow. Henri is likely to become a post-tropical remnant low tomorrow afternoon, if not sooner. After Henri, it appears as if the Atlantic basin will have a brief activity pause, with more activity likely by the end of the month.
